It was a long night - very long - but it's over now. At least, this part of it is. The truly hard part has only just begun. That isn't going to stop Tess from attempting to enjoy the relative quiet time she has these couple of days in the hospital, even if she feels like she's just been hit by a mack truck. Repeatedly.

The baby is finally here. A little girl; her daughter and isn't that incredibly weird to get used to. Everything had gone well and as expected. Of course Ryan had been there, Tess knows she has George to thank for that, but they'll chat about it later. He'd been... helpful, she supposes, and appeared happy with the result.

For now, Tess is alone, resting in her wonderfully private room, the baby asleep barely a few feet away. She can't help but glance over every few minutes, half out of an innate paranoia that the girl may no longer be there and half out of surprise that she is. It's a good thing she's already used to not getting enough sleep.

Zod gives her a slight nod. "How long until you take her home?"

"Tomorrow." Tess half smiles, though it's not terribly genuine. "Then the real fun will begin."

"I'm certain you'll manage," he tells her, with a little smile of his own. "But if you need me to pick up any slack where business is concerned, you need only ask. As always."

Yeah, that fake smile is gone now. "I won't. I told you when this all started it wouldn't affect anything and I meant it."

He nods. "Hence my certainty in your ability to manage."

"If you were so certain you wouldn't have offered," she points out. "You're not one for niceties, especially with me."

"It seems to me that offer has been there for a while." He seems eager to change the subject, however. "Regardless, business doesn't much matter at the moment."

Oh, wait, is this crazy Zod? She can't keep up.

"What do you mean it doesn't matter much at the moment? Of course it matters."

Zod lifts his eyebrows at her. "Right now you simply need to rest, and I'm not here to cause unneeded stress by discussing business."

"She is business, Major," Tess said pointedly. "There are people after me who would love to take advantage of this opportunity to get a little revenge. And if its not me, it could be people after Ryan."

He frowns slightly at that. "Yes, well, those concerns can wait. You're well protected."

"No, they can't wait. They can't ever wait." Tess just mostly sounds tired as opposed to paranoid, which is likely a good thing.

Zod leans back in his chair and simply studies her for a long moment before replying. "Good thing it was worth it, then."

Tess will study him right back. "Well, it's not like I can send her back."

He meets her gaze, his own unfaltering. "Would you?"

"If I didn't want her, she wouldn't be here," she replies evenly enough.

He nods, apparently satisfied enough with her answer not to press the issue further. "I'm sure she'll be grateful that you did."

Tess sighs and picks up a cup of water. "We can hope."

Zod studies her a moment and then lets his gaze drift back over to rest on the baby. "As always."

She watches him carefully. "You can hold her, if you want. I doubt she'll wake up."

His eyes snap back to Tess at that, eyebrows raised. "Hold her? You'd want me to?"

A genuine smile tugs at her lips. "I'd let you, if you wanted to, yes."

He tilts his head at her a little. "Why?"

"Why not?" Tess shrugs. "Most people seem to want to."

Zod gives her a slight shrug in return. "But you specifically pegged me as someone who would."
