Tess has just put Alice back to bed and is looking forward to a quiet night in. As such, she's settled by the fire in the study, a book she'd picked up randomly earlier in the week on the table in front of her. If she's lucky, she might even get to start it.

"He likes books, which he can't read on his own yet," she frowns a little. "I think might try to get him involved in sports once the weather gets warmer."

"Given his energy levels, I think that would be a good idea." Zod pauses and studies her for a moment. "In the meantime, if ever it gets to be too much, I could always...look after him for a day. Of course, he'd probably just want to be with you."

Tess smiles up at him. "I think he'd like that, actually. He does have a fondness for all things military. I suppose it's something you can't take out of the genes."

"I wouldn't even make him spar or anything," he teases, giving her a smile in return. "But I could show him around the barracks, if he's interested."

"I'll ask him about it, but I'm fairly certain he'll be incredibly excited."

She pauses before adding, "Thank you."

He nods. "You're welcome. Just let me know."

"I will." Then there's a comfortable silence for a few moments before she broaches another topic. "How are the soldiers doing?"

"About the same," he says quietly, smile faltering. "No one's really shown improvement yet."

"You said this... other me was trying to find a cure?" Tess asks quietly.

"Yes," he confirms, glancing down at her. "Or so she claimed. She even showed me her findings."

"If you could get me that research..." she replies, meeting his gaze.

"I'll try," he agrees, nodding. "Even if it's a lie, we have few other options."

"Between Emil and I I'm sure we can figure out whether it is or not fairly quickly."

Tess squeezes his hand again. "You shouldn't have gone there by yourself."

Zod sighs and rests his head over against hers. "I was only following a lead. And I was cautious."

She sighs. "And if you found what you say you found then you've put yourself on their radar. Again."

"Was I ever off it?" he asks softly, curling his fingers over hers.

She doesn't really want to answer that, but she does anyway. "I spoke to him not long ago. He seemed still willing to maintain our... agreement."

He shrugs slightly. "If he wanted to hurt me, somehow I doubt he'd have to wait for me to come to him. Besides, there's little more he can do to me."

"He can kill you," she points out, sitting up to look him better in the eyes. "He may just have been playing games before, but if you've stumbled onto something that truly is vital to him, we don't know what he might do."

"Other you expressed a desire to keep my presence unknown to him. Whether that was just part of the act or not I'm not entirely sure," he tells her thoughtfully. "But if it could save my people, I have to go back."

She closes her eyes and heaves a sigh. "I know."

He hesitates briefly before slipping his arms around her and pulling her into a hug. "I'll be fine."

It's still a strange feeling but she doesn't resist, wrapping her arms around him as well. "You'd better be."

"You can keep track of my every move," he points out, fingers teasing a little tuft of hair.

"Oh, I will be." As if that was even a question. And if she appears to snuggle a little closer, surely it's just his imagination.
